We met Jane at the Mabank Dinner toward lunch time Friday. Since the boys had slept in so late it was
much more like breakfast. Xander and
Curtis were very excited to see their Grandmother again. Since I had stayed up so late with the boys
the night before I ended up sleeping most of that day. I was tasked with getting rid of our “amphibian”
friend once again. This time around he
showed up on our front door. We opened
it and let him walk himself out. (I
thought it was a salamander which is an amphibian, but my brother Keith
corrected me, it is a gecko, which is a reptile. Pamela decided to name it since it came
back.)
Saturday was a wet hot hopping day at the Maynard home. We sprayed the trampoline down with water to
enable the boys to be able to jump despite the heat of the day. Xander loved that I started spraying the hose
to the ABC song. He kept requesting it
so I kept stopping and quizzing him about what letters came next. How do we learn our ABCs? We learn by getting sprayed with a hose on a
trampoline in 100 degree weather and giant smiles on our faces, apparently.
Fireworks went off Saturday night throughout our entire
neighborhood. I was surprised by how
late the fireworks were still going off.
Several people were still setting them off past midnight.
On Sunday I was the only adult who was feeling well. Our boys can be a lot to handle for one
person so they stayed at home with Pamela and Jane. I got to church pretty late but still in time
to give the Primary instructions about the activity Pamela had created and to
teach my Sunday School class. More than
half my students were not from the ward, they were visiting because they were
on a scouting trip.
Xander and I went out for a bit on a drive. Late night drives help him settle down and
get some sleep. I tend to take advantage
of the time by singing soft primary songs as lullabies. This particular night was exciting. Most people in Gun Barrel decided to let
loose with their personal fireworks and many of them were very close to the
street. I honestly wondered if our car
was going to be shot by one church on Main Street!
For the Fourth of July we went to a celebration in
Athens. The local fishery put on
fireworks, we picked out a spot and set up a small picnic. The boys and I walked around the Visitor’s
Center for a bit before the show started.
Xander really likes to talk about colors, so we commented on the colors
of the fireworks to help him be brave.
It worked and we had a nice time as a family.
Pamela drove back to Gun Barrel from Athens and we had fun
watching for fireworks on the drive back.
She even lengthened the trip slightly by going as far as Seven Points
before turning back toward home.
